3 Reasons Why You Should Have A Personal Brand

Over the past couple of weeks, I have talked a little bit about my personal brand, as well as how to build your own brand. Now you’re probably asking why even have a personal brand. So today I am going to tell you what I believe to be the top 3 reasons why you should have a personal brand! And to do this I am going to connect each reason with a company to hopefully make things more relatable and easier to understand.

1. Lets people know what to expect from you

Having a personal brand is very similar to having a brand for a business. I am sure almost everyone reading this has stepped foot in a Yankee Candle store or has at least walked by one. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Yankee Candle. Hopefully you thought of the various strong smells you get when either in the store or walking passed. These strong smells is part of their brand and it allows people to expect something from them every time they come in contact with their stores. This same expectation you have of the Yankee Candle brand is what some people could have for your personal brand.

2. Creates a competitive edge over others

When I think of brands that have mastered getting a competitive edge over other companies for the sole reason of their brand, Coca-Cola instantly comes to mind. This company continues to be on top because their brand is recognizable GLOBALLY. Pepsi-Cola will continue to fall short of them because they can’t compete with the Coca-Cola brand. There have been countless focus groups to determine which taste better, Pepsi or Coke, and Pepsi is continuously chosen by customers in this environment when they don’t know which they are drinking. Unfortunately for Pepsi, this doesn’t matter because the Coca-Cola brand is that much stronger. Imagine how much you could grow as a person and how many doors would open up for you if you could create a strong brand for yourself the same way Coke did for themselves.

3. Gives you constant direction and focus

By always thinking back to what your brand is, you will know what you are trying to work towards. This is a huge reason to have a brand because we all hit bumps in the road and being able to fall back on what your brand is and what people expect from you will help you through every situation. One company that I think does a great job with this is lululemon. They may not have hit many speed bumps, but they pride themselves on having high quality clothing even if it means spending more. Some customers have responded negatively to their prices, but in the end the company had remained strong in that they want to produce the best quality work out clothes on the market and that means they will have to be pricier. Without having their strong brand that represent high quality, they may have decided to give in and lower their prices as well as their quality.
