If you have been following along with my posts you have learned a little about myself, how to create a personal brand, and why you should create one. This time I want to show you guys how having a brand can really make the difference when applying for a job. I am sure we have all heard the “walked into a bar” jokes, but this time there is no bar, and this is no joke.
Candidate A:
Candidate A walks into an interview 15 mins early because she knows early is on time, and on time is late. Being on time has been engraved into who she is due to years of playing sports and having to be early to games. Not only is she ready, but she is dressed in a blue suit to show that she is confident in herself and what she has to offer. When called into the room she shakes the employers’ hand strong to once again show her confidence and professionalism. Throughout the interview she answers every question near perfectly because she was prepared for all of the questions that came at her. All of her answers were thorough and gave insight into how her athletic background as well as her working experiences have molded her into the women she is today. Lastly, she leaves the interview with a little joke to get a laugh out of the employer that will leave a lasting impression on them until she hopefully gets that call back.
What is her brand?
- Punctual
- Team Player
- Confident
- Professional
- Responsible
- Thorough
- Funny
Candidate B:
Candidate B walks into an interview just 5 mins before getting called in. Her hair is still a little wet from the shower and her suit a little wrinkled. Once called in she shakes the employers’ hand with her head down and making little eye contact. This lack of eye contact continues throughout the interview. Although the questions are answered in detail and tell the employer much about who this young lady is in front of them; she lacks the nonverbal skills to keep the conversation light and natural. When leaving she shakes the employers’ hand and leaves with a smile on her face thinking things went great.
What is her brand?
She doesn’t have one because she hasn’t been reading my blogs like you guys!
So, 2 candidates walk into an interview… only one walks out with the job.
Who are you hiring?

You're right. One of the most important things to accomplish in an interview is to show the company that you're the type of person they will enjoy being around. You spend a lot of time with the people you work with and a lot of people take this for granted.
I really liked the way you portrayed your idea through a story. The story makes the reader to imagine the real situation you are trying to deliver. I wouldn’t hire the witty-hair lady for sure.
Thanks! I feel like I have been through a bunch of interviews and these are some things I have actually seen from other people either leaving the interview or sitting in the waiting area; it's crazy!
Really great article, Alex! You are a wonderful storyteller! You gave great advice and things to think about when getting interviewed! Keep up the good work!
